Fire Alarm Systems Guide

A practical overview for contractors, electricians and building managers buying fire detection equipment from iComply Supplys. This guide is general information only — always design and install to the current edition of BS 5839-1 (commercial) or other applicable standards, manufacturer instructions, and fire risk assessment requirements.

Conventional vs addressable

  • Conventional systems: Devices are wired in zones. The panel indicates which zone is in fire/fault, not the individual device. Often used in smaller premises and simple layouts.
  • Addressable systems: Each device has an address on a loop. The panel shows device location text, supports advanced cause-and-effect, and is typical for larger or more complex buildings.

Core components we supply

  • Control panels — conventional and addressable panels (e.g. ranges associated with Kentec, Advanced, C-TEC and similar trade lines).
  • Detectors — smoke, heat and multi-sensor heads for appropriate environments (optical smoke for most rooms; heat for kitchens/plant; multi-sensor where specified).
  • Manual call points (MCPs) — break-glass or resettable units at exits and storey exits as required by the design.
  • Sounders & beacons / VADs — audible and visual alarm devices to achieve required sound pressure levels and visual coverage.
  • Bases & mounting — standard, diode and isolator bases matched to the detector family.
  • Interfaces & modules — input/output units, zone monitors and loop interfaces for plant shutdown, door release and third-party signals.
  • Batteries & power supplies — standby batteries and 24V PSUs sized for the system load and standby duration.
  • Fire cable & accessories — enhanced/standard fire-resistant cable, glands and ancillaries for compliant wiring methods.

Protocol compatibility

Addressable detectors, call points and modules must match the panel’s protocol (for example Apollo or Hochiki device families are not interchangeable with every panel). Always check panel documentation and our product descriptions before ordering. If in doubt, email us the panel model and we will help identify compatible devices.

Emergency lighting

Fire alarm systems are often specified alongside emergency lighting. Escape route and open-area luminaires should be designed to BS 5266 and the building’s fire strategy. Browse our emergency lighting products for maintained/non-maintained luminaires and exit signage — commissioning and monthly/annual testing remain the duty holder’s responsibility.

Batteries and standby

Standby batteries are consumable. Replace on manufacturer schedule or when capacity tests fail. Use the correct voltage, capacity (Ah) and terminal type; never mix old and new sets on the same charger without following manufacturer guidance.

Buying checklist

  1. Confirm conventional vs addressable and the panel manufacturer/protocol.
  2. List device quantities from the design drawings or cause-and-effect schedule.
  3. Match bases, isolators and modules to the detector/panel family.
  4. Size batteries and PSUs for alarm load + standby duration required by the standard/spec.
  5. Allow spare devices and call points for spares holding on larger sites.
  6. Plan cable type (standard vs enhanced) per the specification and building type.

Service & maintenance
